60 years ago on May 6, 1955 the first building on the territory of Baikonur City was laid. The city was designated for spaceport  specialists to live in and had different names in different times: Zarya town , Zvezdograd town, Leninsk  city. Baikonur is an official name of the city since December 1995.

June 2, 1995 is considered to be official date of Baikonur foundation since it was on June 2 when USSR Ministry of Defense General Staff approved organization and establishment of the 5th  scientific and research test area by special directive.
