A monument to Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, was opened in the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia ITAR-TASS informs.
“The opening of the monument to Yuri Gagarin in Nicosia in the days when the world celebrates the Cosmonautic Day is very symbolic for Cyprus because the republic is going through hard times. This deep crisis, of course, first of all, concerns the economic relations with the EU, which also affects relations with Russia. Today’s ceremony gives a positive signal: in our life there are things which are very important and special, such as Gagarin’s feat at space exploration, which are examples of common goals for the development of mankind, “- said the president of the Russia-Cyprus Friendship Society.
The sculpture is made by Russian artist Vladimir Usov. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the government of Cyprus and Russia, the business communities of both countries as well as the ambassadors of Russia and Ukraine, Vyacheslav Shumsky and Boris Gomenyuk, as well as the mayor of Nicosia Konstantinos Yorkadzis.
