International ISS crew for the first time tasted lettuce grown onboard the station, – NASA was broadcasting this procedure.
“Cool! Delicious! So fresh!” – commented ISS crew members the taste of red hawk lettuce grown under zero-g conditions. NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren and JAXA astronaut Kimiya Yui were the first to taste the vegetables grown onboard. First astronauts tasted lettuce as it was after that added olive oil and Italian vinaigrette.
Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Korniyenko and Gennady Padalka tasted fresh salad upon completion of EVA.
According to NASA the technology of vegetable growing onboard orbital station opens up new opportunities for space exploration and can be considered as the first step to Mars.
“If we go to Mars – and we definitely will – we have to arrange for crew’s self-sustainment in the course of the flight, – ISS flight engineer Scott Kelly said.
