Nauka (Science) laboratory module testing conducted in Khrunichev Centre showed good results.

Last week space industry specialists successfully finished module body and docking devices pressure testing, – Khrunichev Centre press office reports.

Earlier pneumatic hydraulic system of the engine and external hydraulic circuits were also tested. Currently vacuum leak tests are under way.

Chief Designer of Salyut Design Bureau (one of the Departments in Khrunichev Centre) says:

“Nauka module is designed for a continuous operation in space where conditions  drastically differ from the conditions here on Earth. To check its systems we are conducting the testing in special vacuum camera that enables to simulate the conditions of real space. The works are going according to our schedule and will continue till June 22”.

In July the module will be delivered to Baikonur launchsite. Its integration in the ISS structure will provide for development of Russian ISS segment and scientific researches. The design of the module allows for universal units for scientific equipment both inside and outside that enables to use the module for various tasks.

The launch of the module is planned for spring-summer 2021. Nauka will be launched from Baikonur with the help of Proton-M booster.

P.S. Initially Nauka was designed as Zarya (first ISS module launched in 1998) back-up, its creation started in 1995. In 2004 it was decided to re-equip it turning into the new Russian module to be launched.
