In May, the general designer of the Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering (MIT) Yuri Solomonov said that the Start-1M could be launched from Vostochny.

In April, TASS quoted a source in the rocket and space industry as saying that Russia’s new Start-1M space rocket will be able to launch up to 500 kilograms of payload into low-Earth orbit.

The rocket is solid-fuelled and four-staged. “Start-1M” belongs to the class of “conversion” missiles created based on military ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles) that have served their time. This LV will be produced based on the Topol-M ICBM developed by the Moscow Institute of Thermal Engineering. The previous version, the “Start-1” LV based on the old Topol ICBM has already performed seven launches in 1993-2006 – five were made from the Svobodny Cosmodrome and two from Plesetsk (one of which was unsuccessful). At that time, a total of six satellites with a mass of 200-300 kilograms were put into orbit, but later the launches were stopped due to the lack of suitable payloads.
